Cherokee Seal

The Seal of the Cherokee Nation

Available at Eagle Dancer Gallery ~ League City, Texas is the official symbol of the Cherokee nation. Crafted in sterling silver, 14kt yellow gold, 14kt white gold or platinum this seal is an exact replica of the official seal thaat has represented the Cherokee nation since 1839.

Symbols for the seal are as follows:

  • The seven pointed star at the center represents the original seven clans that have been part of the Cherokee nation long before European influence. When the seal was designed in the 1800's the elders installed the star with the central point facing downward to insure no specific clan could claim they were the "lead" clan for the nation. The elders made it known all clans are equal and each clan has a proper place within the Cherokee nation.
  • The oak wreaths that surround the star represent the oaks that fill the great Smokey Mountain range, The homelands to the Cherokee people. Cherokee leaders often discussed the future of the Cherokee nation while sitting under the oaks. Cultural artworks of the Cherokee people have been made from the oaks for centuries. Homes of the Cherokee people also known as "Long Houses" were often constructed of oakwood. Cherokee people believe the oak is mighty as is the Chereokee nation.
  • Along the outer ring of the seal are the english words "Seal of the Cherokee Nation". This was installed to give the European visitor a clear indication they were in Cherokee lands.
  • The date of "September 6, 1839" was installed on the seal as the date the seal was ratified and became the "offical" symbol for the Cherokee nation.
  • Next to the ratification date is traditional Cherokee writing in the Cherokee alphabet indicating the statement "Cherokee Nation", It is also translated to mean "The People".

This seal is still in use today on nearly all official Cherokee related paperwork and documents and has become synonomous with the people of the Great Cherokee Nation.
